Consciousness

Consciousness is obvious, mysterious, unthinkable, and infinitely deep.  Scientists and philosophers often write convoluted exhausting boring explanations of consciousness; but that is not consciousness.

Consciousness' luminous reality is to be intuited directly and effortlessly. Consider the Dzogchen[1] teachings. Tsoknyi Rinpoche sums it up brilliantly: “Let the display of thoughts, emotions, and perceptions unfold naturally and without clinging, like clouds passing through an open sky.”[2] Consciousness is like the sky – open to everything passing through it but ultimately unaffected. Like a mirror – it reflects everything that passes by while staying clear and empty.

We live mostly in separation consciousness; feeling-thinking "this or that" in a world of distinct, somewhat unrelated objects. Me and you. Us and them. Light and dark - and shades in-between.

The universe is infused with consciousness. But it is unfocused and not self-aware. Life becomes progressively more intelligent until it become self-aware, self-conscious. Feeding back on itself. Learning from its own successes and mistakes.

Unitive, union, or cosmic consciousness is a state of alive luminous oneness. This state is more likely to persist while discursive dualistic thought is suspended.

At one extreme it a bath of bliss. And, we care little for the “details” of maintaining the body.

In a more ordinary functional life, we feel love and unity with others while still aware of separate persons and objects.

Beginner's Mind

Return again and again to where your feet stand; feeling the Earth support you. Return, again and again, to the simple all day long. The present is simple. Running away into the future and past makes it complex. Some people make their spirituality very complex; running through endless hoops in search of enlightenment. Jesus said, “Become as little children again.” Learn to be simple without effort or complexity, constantly surrendered to what is. Our home town, our home base, our own body and mind - it's the best place for developing deep beginner's mind. It’s easy to have "beginner's mind" visiting places with different customs and languages. Mastery, however, is having beginner's mind in our home towns.

Using Time Wisely

Using time wisely is wise living. Time passes and never returns. While living we're in time. We go beyond time through time by way of time. Facing time allows a glimpse of the timeless, the eternal.

Having "time on our hands" disturbs many people. Boredom sets in. Anything seems better than doing nothing or "just" being still.

Love is what we want. Free time is for love. Do and be what we love. Lovers of wisdom spend time engaged in philosophy - a word that really means "love of wisdom". Do what you love. Be what you love.

Nothing Permanent In The Mind, Except Consciousness

There's nothing permanent in the mind,
except consciousness.
Almost impossible to talk or think
our way into this realization.
An easier way is through
meditation or silent prayer.
Some say that
nature is emptiness;
others say that it is God.

It’s up to you
to realize mind's true nature.
Or, perhaps, you are granted grace
and it just happens!

Om's and Breaths

Om's And Breaths by americ
When you make a phone call, you can create an opportunity to chant together one or more "om" sounds and do several slow long deep breaths. A good way to use some of the time together on the phone. NOTE: Long recorded pause near the end for the long quiet breaths. A few words follow.
